April 17-19, 2009

The registration period for this program has passed.

Overview

Novelist and literary critic William Dean Howells opined that "what the American public wants in the theater is a tragedy with a happy ending." During this spring weekend of New York theater, we'll test that theory with a sampling of the city's current offerings. Always exciting, New York theater is currently thriving, so we'll have plenty of plays from which to choose! We will enjoy three of Broadway's and off-Broadway's best new productions and, with the leadership of our knowledgeable faculty leaders, will sharpen our understanding of plays and of theater productions.

We have reserved a block of rooms at the Grand Hyatt, atop Grand Central Station and just a couple of blocks from the Cornell Club—New York.

Participants who are members of the Cornell Club and wish to reside there should make their room reservations directly with the club. Commuters can join all the weekend's activities as well. Our sessions will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17 at the Cornell Club, followed by dinner and an evening performance. On Saturday, we'll meet in the morning for a lecture and discussion, enjoy lunch together, break for free time in the afternoon, and gather for an evening performance. On Sunday, we'll meet in the morning for a lecture and discussion, followed by lunch and a matinee.

Faculty

Glenn Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies and dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, has an enduring interest in contemporary American theater. David Bathrick, former Jacob Gould Schurman Professor in the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance at Cornell and professor of German studies, will bring a broad background in theater and in contemporary culture to our theatrical deliberations.

Program Cost and Travel Arrangements

The program fee of $1,695 includes the welcome reception and dinner on Friday, lunches Saturday and Sunday, orchestra seats at all performances, all taxes and gratuities, management services, and the full educational program. This fee does not include lodging. Lodging at the Grand Hyatt is $289 (per person, double occupancy). The supplement for single occupancy is $289.

Program Notes

Though not physically rigorous, this program involves some walking, and we may have to climb steps at one or another theater.

We plan to select plays by January; final payment for the program will not be due until you know which plays we'll see.
