Overview

Right at the confluence of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario, only fifteen miles from Niagara Falls, you'll find the delightful Victorian village of Niagara-on-the-Lake, home to Canada's renowned Shaw Festival. Begun in 1962 as a theatrical memorial to George Bernard Shaw, the festival offers superb theater by Shaw and his contemporaries in a magical location. The beautiful Queen's Landing Inn, where we'll reside, provides central access to the festival's four handsome theaters as well as the village's lush gardens, wonderful restaurants, and other attractions.
During our stay, we will attend, assess, and discuss four productions with CAU favorite Glenn Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies and dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions. From the recently arrived 2009 Festival list of plays, Glenn has selected Shaw's comedic In Good King Charles's Golden Days, Stephen Sondheim's compelling musical Sunday in the Park with George, Garson Kanin's comedic satire Born Yesterday, and Brief Encounters, a delightful trilogy of three of Noel Coward's short plays. These productions offer a wonderful range of some of the best dramas and comedies of Shaw's time.
