London and great theater have been synonymous for centuries. On CAU's twelfth journey to the London stage, we'll enjoy the best of theater in comfort and style. We'll stay at the Radisson Edwardian Mountbatten, a pleasant hotel located between the theater district and Covent Garden—in walking distance to each—and a convenient setting for our daily lectures and discussions. The heart of the program will be six plays, including productions in the West End and at the Royal National Theatre. Our class leaders will be David Feldshuh, professor in the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance, artistic director of Cornell's Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, and an award-winning playwright, and Glenn Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies and dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
As a practicing director, actor, and playwright, David will focus our attention on the theatrical possibilities and challenges of each production, while Glenn will emphasize the themes and contexts of the plays. Together, they will help us to explore the imaginative process necessary to transform a written script into a successful theatrical creation. They will provide the daily pre-performance lectures and conduct our post-performance discussions of plays they will select this coming winter.
