"The Land of the Incas," Peru offers massive ruins, age-old villages, and spellbinding landscapes. This tour allows adults with or without teen children to take part in experiences and activities stimulating to both age groups. Highlights of the tour are visits to Machu Picchu, the once-lost city of the Incas; Cuzco, the cradle of the Incan Empire; and Lake Titicaca, the world's highest commercially navigable lake—all within the awe-inspiring Andean highlands. Our faculty leader for the trip is John Henderson, professor of anthropology at Cornell, an expert archeologist, and popular leader of CAU tours.

After landing in Lima, we'll fly on to the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas. We'll visit towns rich with archeological sites and still-vibrant local markets. We'll raft on the Urubamba River, walk the historic streets of Cuzco, and visit its landmarks, including superb colonial architecture built right on the thick and beautiful stone walls of the Incas. We'll travel by train to the enchanting site of Machu Picchu and explore its granite temples, altars, squares, and fountains, spending free time at the archeological park or climbing the dramatic peak of Huayna Picchu. Then we'll journey overland through the charming villages of the snow-capped Andes to the shores of Lake Titicaca. Here we'll see the floating islands of the Uros Indians, which, like their houses and boats, are crafted out of the ubiquitous totora reed. Finally, we'll explore Lima's colonial treasures before heading home, steeped in the ancient cultures of Peru and in its beautiful natural environment.
