After the history-making interest in the presidential election of 2008, which generated the largest, liveliest CAU Mohonk seminar ever, who could resist the chance to reconvene to assess Barack Obama's handling of the overwhelming issues of war, recession, and climate change—among so many others—in his first two years as president? We'll prognosticate as well about the effects of the Obama administration's responses to a wealth of events and issues and ponder the potential fates of the seats in play in the House and the Senate.

Glenn Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies and dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, will bring to bear his well-honed skills as social analyst as he lectures on the cultural and ideological temper of the nation on the eve of the elections. Joel Silbey, the President White Professor of History, Emeritus, will focus on the state of national politics and the political parties. Both he and Glenn will study their tea leaves and offer predictions about the outcome of the upcoming congressional elections. All of our lectures, lively discussions, and conversations over meals will take place at the majestic Mohonk Mountain House, whose splendid surroundings you can enjoy during a stretch of free time on Saturday afternoon.
