April in New York: A Spring Theatre Weekend
April 15-17, 2005
New York City
Glenn C. Altschuler and David Bathrick
Theatre in New York is always exciting. Some say Broadway is doing better these days than at any time in recent memory. That's why we've decided to "do" Broadway (and off-Broadway) CAU-style, to enjoy several of the best new productions, and, with the guidance of our expert faculty team, talk about the plays we see and learn how to look at theatre and theatrical productions with a keener eye.
We have requested tickets for three new productions: Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie with Jessica Lange; Shakespeare's Julius Caesar with Denzel Washington; and Martin McDonagh's Olivier Award-winning The Pillowman with Billy Crudup and Jeff Goldblum.
We'll be led by two of our favorite CAU mentors. Glenn C. Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies at Cornell and dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, has a long-standing interest in contemporary and American theatre. David Bathrick, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Dance at Cornell, and professor of German studies, brings a broad background in theatre and in contemporary culture to our theatrical deliberations.
We have reserved a block of rooms at the pleasant Mansfield Hotel, just up Forty-fourth Street from the Cornell Club of New York. Participants who are Cornell Club members can, of course, reside at the Club (you'll make your room reservations directly with the Club). Commuters can join all the weekend's activities as well. Our sessions will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 15 at the Cornell Club, followed by dinner and an evening performance. On Saturday, we'll meet in the morning, enjoy free time in the afternoon after lunch, and gather for an evening performance. On Sunday, we'll meet in the morning and for lunch, and attend a matinee.
The program fee (per-person, double-occupancy) of $1,325 includes lodging at the Mansfield Hotel, all meals except dinner on Saturday, orchestra seats at all performances, all taxes, gratuities, escort services, and the full educational program. The supplement for single occupancy is $175. For commuters and those residing at the Cornell Club, the program fee of $1,095 includes everything listed above except breakfasts and lodging.
This is not a physically rigorous program, but some walking will be involved, and it is possible that we'll have to climb some steps at one or another of the theatres we attend.
