Islam, Indonesia, and the World
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 1: July 12-18, 2009
Islam, Indonesia, and the World
Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country; approximately 90 percent of its nearly 250 million people profess Islam as their religious identity. But how is it that Islam, a religion born in the deserts of Arabia, became so important in Indonesia, a monsoon-climate country many thousands of miles away? The answer lies in trade winds, oceanic encounters, and shared political currents. The long and powerful connections between Southeast Asia and the Middle East are continually strengthened, in part through the annual Muslim religious ritual of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. This course will look at the history of Islam, the history of Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and the interconnectedness of the two over the past one thousand years. Associate professor of history and superb teacher Eric Tagliacozzo specializes in Indonesia, Islam, and the history of smuggling and trade over large global spaces. Through his lectures and our discussions, we will examine how Islam has changed over the past ten centuries--and Indonesia and Southeast Asia along with it. This class will bring to life for us a longevolving history of ships, traders, wandering religious teachers, anti-colonial movements, and--yes--even militant Islam in the early twenty-first century.
