Perfect Plants for the Perfect Garden: A Cornell Plantations Workshop
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 1: July 12-18, 2009
Perfect Plants for the Perfect Garden: A Cornell Plantations Workshop
Whatever the size, shape, or condition of your garden, whatever your budget or your level of expertise, this class in Cornell's Edenic laboratory will allow your horticultural vision to bloom. CAU favorites, landscape designer Irene Lekstutis and horticulturist Mary Hirshfeld, will lead this biennially popular study of gardens and plants. Using the facilities and extensive collections of Cornell Plantations, we will learn about flowers, shrubs, native perennial plants, herbaceous perennials and ground covers, and ornamental shade and flowering trees. We'll spend much of each day outdoors, walking, looking, talking, and touching as we learn to identify and to understand the needs and preferences of many types of plants. Specifically, we'll learn about the importance of scientific nomenclature to home gardeners, pest and disease control, site evaluation and selection for specific types of plants, and hands-on perennial division and shrub pruning. (Please be sure to bring a pair of gardening gloves for these latter activities.) Our outdoor sessions will require a good deal of walking over uneven terrain and exposure to Ithaca's usual summer offerings of sun, heat, humidity, and rain. Wisely attired, you'll be ready for your week with Irene and Mary, which we guarantee will make you a smarter, savvier gardener and horticultural connoisseur.
