Alabaster Carving: A Sculpture Studio

CAU On-campus Summer Programs

Week 1: July 12-18, 2009

Alabaster Carving: A Sculpture Studio

Who has seen the statue of David and not marveled that Michelangelo was able to coax this magnificent figure from a huge block of marble? Roberto Bertoia, associate professor in the Department of Art and CAU's favorite sculptor, will introduce us to the challenges and delights of sculpting in stone, though on an admittedly more modest scale. We will work with alabaster, which is relatively easy to carve and finishes well. First, inspired by a slide show about the processes of stone sculpture and many of the best-known results, we'll sketch out several ideas on paper. (Be sure to bring a sketchbook and pencils.) From these drawings, we'll each create several small, three-dimensional studies, finally choosing one for the main event--a carving in alabaster. We'll each work on our own sculpture as Bob offers us demonstrations and assistance throughout the week. No prior experience is necessary. Materials and facilities: $150.
