Week 2: July 19-25, 2009
War, Politics, and Rights: Before and After 9/11 in Europe and America
How has the U.S. government's post-9/11 "War on Terror" affected you? As countries respond politically to the threats of war, terror, and domestic insurgency, do they suppress dissent, expand the rights of citizens, or a combination of the two? Do democracies under threat show more (or less) respect for rights than do other forms of government? Many scholars have questioned whether a "war on terror" aimed at protecting freedom has had the perverse effect of reducing civil liberties at home and abusing human rights abroad. Is America in danger of becoming a "national security state"? Leading our study of the fate of civil liberties in times of war, terror, and insurrection is Sidney Tarrow, distinguished professor of government and sociology and Cornell's internationally recognized scholar of comparative politics and social movements. In lectures and discussion, drawing on such historical examples as Renaissance Florence and the American Civil War and such contemporary ones as modern Israel and the current "War on Terror," Sid will explore the ways that war, state building, and democratic rights intersect. No special background is necessary.
In 2005, more than one hundred CAU participants, faculty, and staff created and funded The Ralph Janis Seminar in History. Established to honor CAU director emeritus Ralph Janis's years of distinguished leadership, this fund supports one history-related seminar each summer.
