Sustainability: Energy, Environment, and Economic Development
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 2: July 19-25, 2009
Sustainability: Energy, Environment, and Economic Development
Some of us cringed and others cheered when Barack Obama said last October that he would consider off-shore drilling among a raft of strategies for combating energy shortfalls and costs. On the indisputably bright side of Obama's and John McCain's presidential contest, issues of energy, sustainability, and the environment ranked higher than they had in any previous race. We now get to assess the staying power of these issues in the body politic, amid crises of economy and war. Teaming up again to lead our study of vital questions of sustainability are Frank DiSalvo, the John A. Newman Professor of Physical Science and director of the Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future, and Louis Derry, associate professor of Cornell's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences-- wonderful teachers both. Joining them will be lecturers from among the Sustainability Center's faculty who have specific expertise in matters of energy, the environment, and economic development. Frank and Lou, in lecture and lively discussion, will help us to understand that every solution to our energy dilemma has environmental and economic costs as well as benefits. Equally important, we'll discover that the multiple threads of potential solutions are so intertwined and interdependent that we must grapple with them all in a concerted, committed, and long-lived endeavor. Those who took Frank and Lou's class either of the past two summers and new folks are all most welcome. The only prerequisite is an interest in this critical and timely subject.
