Ornithology in Laboratory and Field

CAU On-campus Summer Programs

Week 2: July 19-25, 2009

Ornithology in Laboratory and Field

Birding enthusiasts, seasoned or novice, this class is for you. Our highly informed teachers are Charlie Smith, senior lecturer in the Department of Natural Resources and specialist in field-study techniques and avian conservation, who has led CAU ornithology programs for more than twenty years, and Jeff Keller, an avid birder and a practicing landscape-restoration ecologist. We'll start some days with early-morning field trips to identify birds by sight and sound and to study their behavior in the fields, shorelines, trails, and forests of the Cayuga Lake Basin. On a daylong visit to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, we'll view early migrant shorebirds and wading birds and learn about our Federal Refuge System. Among other highlights will be visits to the collections of birds and sounds at the Laboratory of Ornithology, to Sapsucker Woods in the evening to hear thrushes and owls, and to Cornell's Rare Book collection to see such rarities as an original copy of Audubon's Birds of America. Don't forget to pack your binoculars, an alarm clock, and shoes that are comfortable and proof against mud, high grass, or water!
