For the Love of Books: Bookbinding and Conservation
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 2: July 19-25, 2009
For the Love of Books: Bookbinding and Conservation
Books as we know them have been around for 2,000 years, and, despite the invention of the Kindle and other electronic formats, most of us still have "paper" books that we treasure and love to hold. This class allows you to spend a week in expert and like-minded company. Dedicated to the conservation of books and rare materials for the Cornell University library system, the Conservation Unit of the Department of Preservation and Collection Maintenance invites you to join their staff for one week to study bookbinding and repair techniques. In this hands-on workshop, conducted by Michele Brown with the assistance of other conservation staff, you'll learn a good deal about the history of books, bookbinding, conservation, and book repair. You'll make several blank books, rebind one or two of your own (assuming you have a favorite worn book or two to bring with you), and learn some tricks for taking care of your home library collection. You will also spend one morning in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division in Kroch Library, looking at books from the extraordinary Cornell collection. No special background is necessary. Please note that you'll be using glue, special tools, and cutting equipment and doing much of the work while standing, so comfortable shoes are a must. Materials fee: $70.
