Lincoln: Philosophy in Action
As Wall Street trembles and the United States is mired in an unpopular and costly war, it seems fitting and proper on the bicentennial of his birth to deepen our understanding of Abraham Lincoln. His legacy of saving the Union during its most desperate time and authoring and signing the Emancipation Proclamation makes him perhaps our most beloved president, as well as a prime exemplar of the American Dream. Ed Baptist, associate professor of history, popular CAU teacher, and expert on slavery, the South, and the Civil War, will lead this exploration of our complex sixteenth president, showing how he was, in the best sense of that often backhanded compliment, a consummate politician. From Ed's lectures and in lively discussion, we will come to understand the ways that Lincoln's intellect, ethical philosophy, political skill, and responsive heart shaped his multiple roles as emancipator of slaves (though some now call him racist), manager, and war president. Central to his embrace of all these roles was his profound philosophical thoughtfulness and his desire to understand wide-ranging opinions and a wealth of facts--however inconvenient-- before acting.
