Gorgeous Gorges of the Finger Lakes

CAU On-campus Summer Programs

Week 3: July 26-August 1, 2009

Gorgeous Gorges of the Finger Lakes

Spectacular gorges cut through the Finger Lakes area, two of them right through the Cornell campus, and abundant within them is evidence of the forces that shaped them and the life that has flourished here. In fact, Ithaca is one of the most fossil-rich places on Earth. Who better to guide us on our exploration of Fall Creek, Cascadilla, Buttermilk, Taughannock, and Watkins Glen gorges than Warren Allmon, geologist, paleontologist, naturalist, director of Ithaca's Paleontological Research Institution and its spectacular Museum of the Earth, and much-respected teacher in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences? During this week of geological and biological study in museum and field, Warren will lead us in our discovery of the region's rocks and fossils and its past and current flora and fauna as we drink in the beauty of these dramatic sites. Our field trips will average about three miles a day and require modest climbing. You needn't be an athlete, but you should be able to wade a stream and climb a few steps without difficulty. In comfortable shoes and appropriate dress, you'll be attired for wonder.
