Make Your Mark: The Medium and the Message of Prints
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 3: July 26-August 1, 2009
Make Your Mark: The Medium and the Message of Prints
Delight your inner artist by joining this richly layered CAU class. In a sequel to last summer's highly successful art course, we'll integrate study of the fabulous holdings of Cornell's Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art with hands-on studio work. This time, our subject will be prints of various genres. Cathy Klimaszewski, associate director of programs and Ames Curator of Education at the Johnson, will guide our morning explorations of the techniques, processes, and materials that artists across cultures from the sixteenth to the twentieth century have used to express their ideas in prints. We'll view etchings, engravings, woodcuts, lithographs, silkscreens, and mixed media images in the museum's extensive collection of works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Hiroshige, Hokusai, Matisse, Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Jennifer Bartlett, among many other artists. In the afternoons and on Wednesday morning, we'll join Greg Page, associate professor of art and himself an accomplished printmaker, in Tjaden Hall's printmaking studios. Greg will first demonstrate two or three kinds of printmaking, and then each of us will pick one genre on which to work throughout the week, as we bring to life one of our own drawings in a completed print. No special training or experience is necessary. Just come with the desire to enjoy and create art. Materials fee: $75.
