Digital Photography I: Focus on Aesthetics
Do you struggle to decide what makes for an interesting subject, how close to zoom in on it, or how to adjust for light that is too intense or too dim? In this class, designed specifically for novice digital photographers, the emphasis will be on camera use and the aesthetics of photography. CAU stalwart Barry Perlus, nationally known photographer and associate professor of art at Cornell, will teach the photographic basics of composition, framing, lighting, and the art of observation in the primary photo genres-- portraits and self-portraits, landscapes, documentary, and studio photography. We will shoot photos daily at a variety of selected locales. Each participant will need a digital camera. However, Barry will supply a camera for the week to those who do not yet own one. Although he will concentrate almost exclusively on helping us to become adept at using the camera, Barry will also introduce us briefly to organizing or retouching photos or creating albums of our pictures of family, friends, and landscapes. For these possibilities, participants will need only elementary computer skills. The primary prerequisite for this course is a desire to develop ease and skill taking aesthetically satisfying photos with the digital camera. Facilities and materials fee: $75.
