CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 3: July 26-August 1, 2009
Kayaking
Enjoy with us a duck's-eye view of a lake as you slip quietly through the water in your sleek cocoon, powered by your own steady stroke. This introductory class in kayaking skills will delight you. Led by Walt Mann, an expert instructor with Cornell's Outdoor Education, you will learn how to stroke smoothly and efficiently and how to roll over and right yourself in a kayak. In the course of the week, you'll practice on a variety of bodies of water, particularly enjoying the shoreline, gorges, flora, and fauna of beautiful Cayuga Lake. You will learn not just recreational kayaking skills, but also stroke techniques, how to load and unload a kayak, and the touring, safety, and rescue skills that will give you the confidence and freedom to take extended overnight trips through a multitude of waterways. We will provide all equipment. You need no paddling experience, though you must be able to swim. Equipment and transportation fee: $140.
