Great American Trials: Freedom of Speech and the Supreme Court
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 4: August 2-8, 2009
Great American Trials: Freedom of Speech and the Supreme Court
You'll have a bench-side seat as we examine eight fascinating Supreme Course cases in this 2009 edition of our ever-popular Great Trials course. Led by CAU favorites Glenn Altschuler, the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies, and Faust Rossi, the Samuel S. Liebowitz Professor of Trial Techniques at the Cornell Law School, we'll study these cases in order to reflect on our system of justice, the litigation process, and American culture. Faust and Glenn will focus on trials requiring a balance between freedom of speech and the maintenance of law, stability, and order in the United States. Faust will lecture about flag salute and flag burning cases, the neo-Nazis' right to march through Skokie, Illinois, Vietnam General William Westmoreland's suit against CBS News, and the recent Bong Hits 4 Jesus case. Glenn will examine the "clear and present danger" doctrine, the government's right to outlaw the Communist party, the Mapplethorpe obscenity case, and the McCain/Feingold campaign financing law. We solemnly swear that Glenn and Faust will also allow time for plenty of discussion. You need no special background, but do come prepared to deliberate--and opine.
