Thanks for the Memory--and the Brain Where It Resides
Who over 50 hasn't done a little dance of frustration to shake down a name just on the tip, the tip of . . . no, gone! And who of us at any age hasn't strolled down the mazy paths of memory, one delicious recalled moment leading to another, as we relive an event? What goes on in our brains at such times? In this course, under the leadership of David Smith, assistant professor and highly respected teacher of psychology, we will discuss memory in its many forms. In lecture and discussion, David will deepen our knowledge of the neurobiology and the psychology of memory. What is memory, and how does it work? When is it reliable, and when does it tend to fail? What are false memories? What is the neurological basis of amnesia? David will introduce us to the brain mechanisms of memory from birth to maturity, and we'll explore whether there is more than one kind of memory and memory system in the brain. We will also consider what happens to our memory with aging and, differently and more dramatically, with such neurological crises as Alzheimer's disease. You need have no special background for this course, not even a world-class memory, just an interest in a subject that at one time or another commands the attention of us all.
