A Room of Their Own: The Bloomsbury Artists

CAU On-campus Summer Programs

Week 4: August 2-8, 2009

A Room of Their Own: The Bloomsbury Artists

"Art is a passion, or it is nothing." So said Roger Fry, painter, art critic, and one of the leading members of London's early twentieth-century Bloomsbury group, whose progressive attitudes about feminism, pacifism, sexuality, and intrinsic and utilitarian value infused both their art and their literature. This class, taught by Nancy Green, the Gale and Ira Drukier Curator at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell and leader of many popular CAU seminars, will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nancy has spent several years assembling a show of two hundred works by the Bloomsbury artists: paintings, watercolors, drawings, books from the Hogarth Press, and decorative works from the Omega Workshop. The show premiered at the Nasher Museum at Duke University in December 2008 and is traveling now to art museums at Smith College, The Pennsylvania State University, and Northwestern, among others. But in July 2009 it will be installed at the Johnson, the occasion and the focus of this singular class on the output of such Bloomsbury artists as Fry, Virginia Woolf 's sister Vanessa Bell, and Lytton Strachey's longtime-companion Dora Carrington and his cousin Duncan Grant. None of us may ever again have the chance to appreciate so fully the philosophy and spirit of this remarkable group as we enjoy up close and personal so many of their artistic productions.
