Creative Nonfiction: A Writing Workshop
CAU On-campus Summer Programs
Week 4: August 2-8, 2009
Creative Nonfiction: A Writing Workshop
Childhood memoir, personal essay, travel writing, portraits, short vignettes, essays of place, photo essays, nature writing, literary journalism--all these forms invite us to write about the real world with personal commitment, grace, and power. In this workshop, CAU stalwart Lynda Bogel, senior lecturer in the Department of English at Cornell, will provide strategies for making your creative nonfiction take shape, for speaking with your voice and point of view, and for communicating imaginatively with your audience. We'll look for anecdote, dialogue, scene-setting, suspense, character development, and telling descriptions to dramatize the lively intelligence you bring to your writing. In drafting and re-drafting your pieces, you will have feedback from classmates and Lynda, all paying attention to language that soars, the power of storytelling, the pursuit of fact, and the roads to play and discovery. No special background or training is necessary.
