CRP 5080: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

Using GIS for Parcel-based Analysis

May 28-June 30, 2008

Program overview

This intensive four-week, four-credit, distance learning program introduces students to the theory and techniques of using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analyzing neighborhoods. GIS is a computer-based data processing tool used to manage and analyze spatial information. Using ArcGIS9.2, this course provides a practical introduction to the basic functionality of desktop GIS.

Students learn skills including:

  • identifying zones,
  • measuring distances,
  • calculating areas,
  • integrating spatial data, and
  • displaying output.

Students also explore topics such as:

  • data organization,
  • geocoding addresses,
  • making maps quickly,
  • projection,
  • data exchange between programs, and
  • the organization of raster and vector data using Web-based sources.

This course is designed to allow students to produce projects in their area of interest. Participants must complete a poster and written report using spatial data. By the end of the course, students will have developed a solid base on which to build further expertise in GIS.

Courses and faculty

Students register in CRP 5080 (DL) Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for four credits. Students must attend online chats and complete lab exercises and assigned readings. The program is led by Dr. Michelle M. Thompson, a real estate research and education consultant, a faculty associate with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and a visiting lecturer in the Cornell Department of City and Regional Planning.

The course book is "Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop: The Basics of ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo Updated for ArcGIS 9" (ISBN: 1-58948-083-X). The book can be purchased at a reduced price from Amazon.com, or through ESRI. (Note that the ESRI price includes a 180-day trial version of ArcGIS9.2.)

Other course materials, articles, and supplemental exercises will be available during the course for registered students only.

Tuition and registration

The total program fee is $3,700. Online enrollment is available for this class (for students who are eligible), or students may submit a course enrollment form and distance learning supplemental registration form, and your tuition payment to the Summer Session office by Friday, May 16, 2008.

Students say

"Learning about GIS for the first time was an enlightening experience because it opened my mind to the large number of applications GIS can be used for." -Sameer Qudsi, Business Development Analyst, Lockheed Martin

"I found GIS useful because it is a method to transform quantitative data into visual information. I witnessed good potential to utilize GIS for verification of some profound ideas for conflict resolution in disputed areas in the world." -Tadayuki Hara, School of Hotel Administration, PhD Program

"GIS provides a unique way to link socioeconomic and biophysical variables for environmental decision-making." -Kevin Anderson, Regional Planning, Masters Program
