Subject: Request to Attend Cornell University/EACUBO's Administrative Management Institute 2009

I am writing to request your permission to attend what has been described as one of the most effective, practical, inspiring, and cost-efficient seminars there is: the Administrative Management Institute (AMI), to be held at Cornell University July 26-31, 2009.

This acclaimed institute, cosponsored by Cornell and the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers (EACUBO), is designed for professionals in positions such as mine. Below are several of the reasons why I believe my attendance at this conference will prove to be a valuable professional experience for me and a long-term benefit to our organization:

  • AMI features panel discussions, workshops, lectures, and case studies led by some of the best in the field, including distinguished members of university administrations and faculties; college officers and unit managers whose work is recognized as outstanding; and senior representatives from a variety of institutions nationwide. These are the experts we can't afford not to hear from at this time.
  • The content is specific, practical, based on real-world experiences, and not available in this format anywhere else. I will return with skills I can use immediately. I will also be aware of coming trends and how we might prepare ourselves to use them to our advantage.
  • AMI sessions focus on tackling the hot topics and issues we frequently face, such as:
    • Current issues in employment law and compliance
    • Improving business practices
    • Risk management and liability
    • Ethics and fiduciary responsibility
    • Hot topics in higher education, including a tax update
    • Dynamic negotiations
  • AMI offers invaluable opportunities to build my network of relationships in support our organization. I am confident that the benefits of this shared expertise, and hearing from other participants about the innovative and highly effective methods they have found to deal with today's challenges, will prove to be especially valuable in these tough economic times.
  • Based on experiences of past participants, I'll come back informed, inspired, and energized, ready to jump back into work and handle difficult projects.

Further, I would be happy to do a presentation about my AMI experiences when I return to the office.

The program charge is $1,725, and with so many valuable opportunities to learn immediately applicable skills, broaden my base of knowledge, and make contacts with top-notch professionals, this conference is definitely provides value for this investment.

Registration is now open for AMI and, because the conference fills quickly, I would like to enroll as soon as possible if this request meets with your approval.

Thank you in advance for considering this. I would be happy to respond to anything not addressed above. For more information, you may also wish to visit www.sce.cornell.edu/ami or contact their Executive Education office directly at cusp@cornell.edu or 607.255.7259.

Sincerely,

(Your name)

Money-saving tips

Don't let tight budgets keep you away from AMI. Here are some ideas about how to save money:

  1. Consider driving or carpooling to Ithaca. We have set up a conference portal site --consider using it to find a carpooling partner.
  2. If you are flying to Ithaca, reserve your flight as soon as possible and use frequent flier miles if possible.
  3. Book your hotel and car reservations early, too. (And consider skipping the car rental as Ithaca has plenty of taxis and buses, and all events take place on the Cornell campus.)
  4. Bring a co-worker or friend and share costs.
  5. Share a hotel room or book a room in a Cornell dorm.
  6. If your organization offers tuition reimbursement ask if AMI might qualify.
  7. Offer to split the cost with your boss -- you pay travel and lodging, s/he pays your registration fee.
