Keynote: The Challenges and Opportunities Facing Higher Education Today

Sponsored Programs Compliance: What You Should Know

Many unit managers already have grants and funded projects as a part of their responsibilities. As academic institutions and departments increasingly pursue multiple sources of funding, even more managers will become involved in these areas. This session is designed to be valuable to all managers, whether or not they currently oversee sponsored programs.

Employee Engagement During Challenging Times

As the economic downturn forces us to make tough choices we don't want to miss this great opportunity to reinvent how we engage with our coworkers and colleagues. In other words, we'd like to "have our cake and save it, too!" This session will feature an award-winning unity-HR speaker paired with internationally recognized work-life consultant.

What Every Manager Should Know About IT Security

This session is designed to enhance the manager’s understanding of IT security. We hear an overview of current security threats, discuss legislation driving security requirements, and learn about the components of an organization’s security strategy and proven techniques to establish company security priorities. Key topics for review include security threats and compromise techniques, the legal perspective, policy, effective infrastructure, technology, and strategies to implement and gain support for IT security.

Current Topics in Employment Law

In an era of expanding legal requirements and shrinking budgets, managers are under increasing pressure to make sound employment decisions that will withstand possible legal challenge. This interactive seminar includes a discussion of videotaped scenarios developed to address current topics in employment law, with a focus on identifying those "red flag" issues that should prompt a call to counsel.

Fiduciary Responsibility

Managers are responsible for managing assets of the university on behalf of their units and for the benefit of the institution itself. The accountability that managers bear for the well-being of the larger organization is a critical, but often ignored, aspect of their responsibilities. In this session we examine financial stewardship in the collegiate setting, highlighting the practices that create a positive control environment. We also identify the steps administrative managers can take to prevent and deal effectively with issues that may undermine their ability to fully meet their fiduciary responsibility.

Changing the Cost Model

As colleges and universities across the country seek to reduce expenses and adapt to longer-term projections of income shortfalls, we are all called upon to be creative in our approach. How institutions respond to the present circumstances and how they are able to build and invest as the economy recovers will be significant determinants of where they will be a decade from now. In this session, representatives from three institutions will describe their efforts to creatively adapt to lower budgets while preserving institutional mission, a sense of community, and high-quality service to students and the public. In the long run, we are each searching for ways to change the cost "model" of our institutions: to lower ongoing costs while focusing on our mission objectives. In that way, current budget cuts are categorically different from many other exercises, in which the focus was simply on short-run accommodation with the presumption that the prior circumstances would be restored.

Managing Risk

The very phrase "risk management"—signifying "systematic control of the uncontrollable"—defines the challenges facing today's administrative manager. How can we be both prudent and entrepreneurial, controlling risk and exposure without rejecting opportunity? And what must we understand about the changing legal and regulatory context in which we operate? In this session, a seasoned and senior professional presents risk management as a continuous process in which we take the initiative in identifying and quantifying risk and use the results to make appropriate and consistent decisions.

Creating Our Future Together

One of the few constraints in today's workplace is the expectation of constant change. In this all-day session, participants learn the new behaviors required of leaders and discover practical strategies for managing others—and for developing personal and professional success—throughout the change process. The session also explores the implications of the fact that the development of quality relationships is as important to team success as is the development of technical skills.

Negotiation Essentials

All managers are negotiators. This role is growing in importance as we recognize our need for increased teamwork and cooperation within and across unit boundaries. If we are committed to working with our colleagues and even with our "opponents" to reach mutually beneficial agreements, our successes will multiply. This session helps develop skills for creating win-win outcomes and for managing our conflicts more effectively.
