An invitation from Cornell University President
David J. Skorton

Cornell University President Hunter R. Rawlings IIIIf you are an intellectually curious and academically talented high school student looking to experience the challenges of college life next summer, I invite you to consider attending Summer College and to discover for yourself not only what makes Cornell so special, but also why Summer College graduates say their time here gave them the best foundation they could imagine for succeeding in college and, later, in their careers.

Cornell University began with a revolutionary idea: it aspired, in the words of its founder, Ezra Cornell, to be “an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.” Today, 142 years after its founding, Cornell is the most academically diverse university in the Ivy League, the land grant university for the State of New York, and one of the world’s leading research universities. There is really no place quite like Cornell.

In keeping with its commitment to public service, Cornell was one of the first universities in the nation to invite intellectually curious and talented high school students to campus to enjoy the challenges of college life. For more than forty-five years, through a program now known as “Cornell University Summer College Programs for High School Students,” Cornell has provided unparalleled opportunities to live and learn at a great Ivy League university.

As a Summer College student, you’ll have a chance to explore subjects and disciplines to which you may not have had access in high school. You’ll study along with undergraduates, learn from world-renowned faculty members, and enjoy small classes that foster focused interaction between you and your professors. In addition, you’ll have access to Cornell’s vast resources, including one of the largest academic library systems in the world and one of the most beautiful campuses anywhere.

Academics are a central component of Summer College, and the opportunities for learning extend far beyond the classroom and laboratory. Living with students from all over the country and the world will introduce you to new cultures and backgrounds, giving you an unsurpassed opportunity to be part of an international, multicultural community. At Summer College you’ll learn from your peers and form friendships that may last a lifetime. Years later, many students regard Summer College as being one of the best experiences of their lives.

Best regards,
David J. Skorton
President, Cornell University
