Faculty excellence

Summer College programs offer students the rare opportunity to work closely with some of Cornell's most distinguished professors. “Inspiring,” “dedicated,” “amazing,” “wise,” “fascinating,” “motivating,” “awesome!”—these are a few of the adjectives Summer College students have used to describe their professors.

Under the guidance of these exceptional teachers, you’ll develop the critical thinking, discussion, and writing skills essential for success in college, and have the chance to talk with them about your academic goals and career aspirations.

Here's a look at some of the outstanding Summer College faculty with whom you could study this summer:

  • "Body, Mind, and Health" academic director, Professor Marsha Hurst, is a research scholar at Columbia University’s Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy and a faculty member of Columbia’s Narrative Medicine Program. She is the author of numerous publications and coeditor, with Sayantani DasGupta, of Stories of Illness and Healing: Women Write Their Bodies, an anthology of women’s illness narratives.
  • "Freedom and Justice" academic director, Professor Isaac Kramnick, is the recipient of Cornell's Clark Distinguished Teaching Award and a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow. He is a prize-winning author and historian and has served Cornell as vice provost for undergraduate education at Cornell and as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Professor Thomas Gilovich, academic director of "The Individual in the Social World", is chairperson of Cornell's Department of Psychology. He is most widely known for his research that unmasks the "hot hand" in basketball and for his first two books, How We Know What Isn’t So and Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes.
  • "Democracy and Its Discontents" academic director, Professor Nick Salvatore, has won awards for his outstanding teaching and is the author of three widely reviewed books. He has received some of the historical profession's most prestigious national awards, including being named a member of the Society of American Historians.
  • Professor Henry Richardson, academic director of "Introduction to Architecture," is an award-winning professor, a licensed architect, a nationally certified city and regional planner, and an international consultant.
  • Jason Locke, leader of the "CollegeSuccess" program, is director of undergraduate admissions for Cornell. He is also an avid historian, who focuses on organizational development, ethics and leadership, and issues of justice.
