Grades and transcripts
Summer College students receive letter grades only. You may not take courses on a pass/fail or satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis (except for Computer Science 1109). In addition, you'll receive grades and credit only for completed course work. Courses you visit will not appear on your Cornell transcript.
After Summer College is over, your enrollment in courses, your grades, and the number of credits you earned will be recorded on an official Cornell University transcript and will be a part of your permanent and complete academic record at the university. There is only a single complete Cornell University record for each student. All courses offered by Summer College are Cornell University courses.
In late August/early September you will be able to access your grade(s) online through Just the Facts using your Cornell NetID. Grades cannot be given over the telephone, e-mail, or fax. If you are unable to access your grade(s), please contact the Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) HelpDesk at 607.255.8990. Architecture students should contact 607.255.5236 or e-mail if you have any questions about the evaluation.
As your student adjusted to the academic challenges at Cornell, families need to adjust to a new set of procedures for reporting grades. When your child was in primary and secondary school, you were probably used to seeing report cards and class schedules. Many families are alarmed to learn that the university's policy on student education records, together with federal law, guarantees each student the right to keep his or her records private, including professors' names, course schedules, and grade reports.
The educational records of all students at Cornell, regardless of student age, are protected under both the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and the Cornell University Access to Student Information, Policy 4.5.
Many families who still provide most of their child's financial support feel that they have a right to know what academic progress their child is making. Many students have grown up with their parents as active partners in their academic lives and are surprised to learn that the university does not automatically include parents when distributing grade reports and other educational records.
We urge you to discuss your feelings on these issues with your student and to maintain open communication about your student's academic life while attending Summer College.
Sometimes students ask us if they can delete or change bad grades on their Cornell transcript. No, they cannot. All grades are recorded on an official Cornell transcript and are part of a permanent record at Cornell.
How do Summer College alumni get transcripts sent to schools?
When you apply to colleges, you may want copies of your transcript forwarded to the schools of your choice. Your Cornell transcript represents a true and complete record of your academic work here.
There are a couple of ways to request an official transcript:
- Go to http://www.transcript.cornell.edu. You'll need your Cornell NetID and your password (only you know your password) or
- Submit a written request by mail to the Office of the University Registrar, Cornell University, B7 Day Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853-2801 or fax to 607.255.6262.
Please be sure to include:
- your full name as written on your Summer College application
- Cornell ID number (7-digit number on your Cornell ID card)
- dates of attendance
- return address
- complete destination address for each transcript
- daytime telephone number in case there is a problem with your request
- your signature (your transcript cannot be released without your signature).
There is no charge for a transcript request. If you have any questions, please call 607.255.4232.
Questions on applying credit earned through Summer College toward Cornell degrees must be directed to the appropriate Cornell college advising office. The transfer of credit to another institution is subject to the approval of that institution.
