High school students from around the world converged on Cornell in 2007

High school students from around the world to converge on Cornell this summerA record-breaking number of international students will attend this year's prestigious Cornell University Summer College Program for High School Students.

Of the 162 international students planning to spend six-weeks on campus this summer, 33 of them are participating in the China-Cornell College Preparatory Program, while another 10 hail from Qatar, home to the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. The remaining students come from countries from Brazil to Malaysia.

The groundbreaking China-Cornell College Preparatory Program, now in its second year, gives Chinese high school students the rare opportunity to take courses, earn credits, explore majors and experience life at an American university.

The 33 students taking part this summer (up from seven last year) come from six high schools: Jiao Tong Affiliated High School, WuXi Middle School, Beida Appendant Experimental School, Fudan Affiliated High School, Beijing Foreign Language School, and the secondary school attached to East China Normal University. The students will be taking a writing course in English as a Foreign Language and visiting a second course of their choice.

Summer College director Abby Eller is delighted with the growth of the China-Cornell program. "Last year's students raved about this revolutionary program, so we're delighted to be able to work with more students this year. Our aim is to promote understanding between people from different parts of the world and to expand educational opportunities, and this program is a great way to accomplish these goals."

The students from Qatar will focus on English immersion classes and science-related classes preparatory to applying to the Weill Cornell Medical College.

Now in its 45th year, the Cornell Summer College program invites talented high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to live and study on the Ithaca campus for up to six weeks each summer. Students experience college life, explore a wide variety of academic majors, make lifelong friends, and prepare for the future. The program enrolls 784 high school students from 38 states and 38 countries. Their classes began June 25.
