Jordana

My name is Jordana. I have just finished my sophomore year at Westfield High School in Westfield, New Jersey. I have grown up in Westfield, although I spend parts of every summer on Fire Island, New York. I will be studying Social Psychology at Cornell this summer. I am very involved with an organization called Girls Learn International, Inc., which involves middle and high school students in the efforts for universal girls' education. I am also a member of the Executive Board of the Westfield High School Student Council and the Editorial Board of Folio, the Westfield High School Literary Magazine. My favorite extra-curricular activity is dance, and I take classes on week nights during the school year. During the second half of the summer of 2006, I will be working as an intern at Equality Now in New York City. I am very much looking forward to attending Cornell this summer!

It's hard to believe that I will be arriving at Cornell in five days! I have not had much time to think about it because I have just finished a week of final exams. Now there is not much time to think -- just time to pack. Things are also complicated because while I am at Cornell, my family will be moving into a new house. This is a summer of many changes. I am very excited to go to Cornell because I have heard great things about it from my sister's friends who attend college there. I am looking forward to meeting my roommate and getting to know many kids. This is the first summer that I have ever gone away without a friend so I am a little nervous but I'm sure that it will all work out well. I can't wait to see everyone in five days!

It has been exactly one week since I arived at the Cornell Summer College. So far I am enjoying myself very much! Over the past few days I have been exposed to many different aspects of college life. I am taking a course in social psychology and I am pleasantly surprised to find that I am more interested in this course than I have ever been in any class that I have taken so far in high school. The topics that we are studying in the class have a real relevance to issues that we are facing in our lives and in the world. Once I got through the first work day I realized that although we are given a lot of reading, it is manageable if you schedule yourself accordingly. The fact that the reading is thought-provoking makes studying much easier. I am also pleased with the social opportunities that this program has provided. Through my class, dorm, and free time I have met many people and made many friends. I can't believe that I have only been here for a week, because it seems like I have been living in this dorm and knowing these people for so much longer!

I cannot believe that two weeks have passed already! Time seems to have flown by since I arrived at Cornell. However, it feels like I have known the people here forever. This past weekend was extremely fun. I went to the dance in Low-Rise 7 last night and everyone seemed to be having a very good time. This weekend we had a college fair that provided us with the opportunity speak with the representatives of many great schools. I also took a tour of the Cornell campus which though it was long (due to the great size of the campus), it provided me with a lot of information about the school that I did not know. During the course of this last week, I have a lot of studying to do since my final exam is on Friday. However I do have a lot of exciting activities to look forward to, especially the variety show. I love the friends that I have made here and it is so sad that in a week we are all leaving! However, I intend to make the most of my last days here!

It is Friday afternoon and I have just begun to pack up my room. I am so sad to be leaving. Today I took my final exam and I felt a great sense of accomplishment upon finishing the course. At first it seemed challenging to enter such an intense program after such a busy school year, but I wound up finding it extremely rewarding and intellectually stimulating. I definitely want to continue my studies in psychology in the future. I have met some amazing people here with whom I intend to stay in touch. It may be hard going to high school after living like a college student. Overall this small taste of Cornell has been a wonderful experience and I recommend it highly!
