Casey

Hi, my name is Casey and I just wrapped up my junior year at Port Huron Northern High School. I was born and raised in Port Huron, Michigan, which is otherwise known as the beautiful maritime capital of the Great Lakes. This summer at Cornell University I will be studying medicine and taking the three-week course entitled Body, Mind, and Health. I have a passion for medicine and hope to one day go into pediatrics. After Summer College I will be traveling to Washington, D.C. for two weeks with the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine to learn firsthand from the nation's leading physicians. Aside from medicine I love to play volleyball and have played competitively for the last five years. Lately I have been working on my nonprofit organization called Warm Hearts in which I have gathered cosmetic bags and toiletries together for local women's shelters and halfway houses. I can't wait to see what this summer holds for me at Cornell University!

The last five days have flown by, as I am still awestruck by Cornell's gorgeous campus as Ithaca provides for a stunning backdrop to this beautiful university. So far my class has been quite interesting and has offered me with new perspectives on the field of medicine. As for the coursework, it has been vigorous, yet manageable. The staff at Summer College is nothing but the best, as my world-renowned professor has given remarkable lectures and my down-to-earth teaching assistant has provided an immense amount of help during this intense first week. It has been severely humid the past few days, but I always looked forward to having an ice cream sundae at the delicious North Star Dining every night. It has been fun getting to know so many diverse people as well as making lots of new friends, and I can't wait to continue this fulfilling Ivy League experience for the next two weeks.

I can't believe that I only have one week left here at Summer College. As cliché as it sounds, I honestly feel like I have been a student at Cornell forever. I have been enjoying Body, Mind, and Health greatly as this week Professor Brumberg took us to a small cinema in downtown Ithaca to watch the new controversial Michael Moore film "Sicko." This experience as well as many others has made me ponder about the past, present, and future of medicine, as understanding these crucial topics is essential for any individual that is interested in medicine. Aside from the numerous hours studying, there has been much to do here in Ithaca. The last two weeks I have enjoyed activities such as hiking along the breathtaking gorges, shopping at the Pyramid Mall, exploring the Commons and Collegetown, Casino Night, '80s Dance Party, and many other exciting events. With only one week remaining I definitely plan on making the most of my limited time here at Summer College!

It has been just over one week since my Cornell Summer College experience has come to an end. As I write this final journal in my dorm at Georgetown University, it doesn't quite feel the same as my cozy room at Cornell that I called home for three remarkable weeks. My final week at Cornell was both incredible and intense -- the feeling I received when I handed in my final exam was a great sense of accomplishment that I will never forget. I have gained so much insight in the three weeks that I attended Summer College, in which I challenged myself with the Ivy-League curriculum and further narrowed down my college options and explored the world of medicine through a different perspective. On our last Friday afternoon three of my closest friends and I enjoyed a delicious lunch in Collegetown and reminisced about the laughs we shared and all the memories we made. I will never forget my experience at Cornell as I continue to miss the "gorges" campus and interesting people that made my experience so unique and something that I will continue to cherish for the rest of my life!
