Drue

My name is Drue and I live in Slingerlands, New York. I like to play guitar, tennis and piano. I also love animals, especially reptiles! At Summer College, I’m taking “The Individual in the Social World.” I LOVE psychology and I am very excited to take this course. I’m really looking forward to learning a lot about what makes people tick, but I am a little worried about homework! I’m psyched to meet new people and make new friends.

I finished my first week at Summer College! It went by incredibly fast. After getting lost on the way to Cornell, I finally arrived with my family with enough time to set up my dorm room and buy my textbook. That weekend, I made a ton of new friends that are awesome to hang out with. I have met a ton of new people from all over the world, all with different opinions and values that make for amazing debates and discussions. It feels like I have known these kids for years instead of days!

My first week of classes was really great. I am learning a lot about psychology and I find the coursework very interesting. I took my first quiz on Friday and I hope I did well, so cross your fingers for me! I have also noticed that the Cornell campus is HUGE! I come from a very small high school, so this is a truly awe-inspiring experience for me. Although I do complain a bit, I do actually enjoy the treks around campus, whether I am walking to class with friends or wandering around near the lake. This whole experience has been amazing so far, and I can't wait to see what next week will bring!

This past week just flew by completely! It feels like I just got here, but it is almost time to leave. I have been having such a great time that saying good-bye will be very hard. I am enjoying my psychology class SO much. I love learning how the mind works and how different attitudes and behaviors affect our daily lives. A typical weekday for me involves waking up early, grabbing breakfast, and heading to class a bit early to go over the last night's reading and to chat with my friends. After lecture, I go to my seminar to go over what we learned in lecture and to learn about new topics from my TA. Then, off to lunch at Trillium for either a turkey sandwich or a chicken quesadilla. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I have a clinical seminar that shows me about different careers in psychology (it's really cool!). Then, back to my dorm room to do homework and study, and then I go to dinner with friends and have a relaxing night. I love being here at Cornell (even though it has been incredibly hot) and I will be sad to leave this Saturday.

I cannot believe Summer College is over. I learned so much in my class and enjoyed it a whole lot. My course confirmed that I definitely want to go into psychology in the future. I am going to major in psychology in college, and so we'll see where that takes me! I found everything incredibly interesting. My first week back at home felt a little weird, but it is good to be back. I miss everyone who I met at Summer College, but I know we'll keep in touch. I've been calling people who are still in the 6-week program when they are out of class! I know we'll see each other in the future. I am now working at a children's baking camp full-time. This week we made apple puff pastry, chocolate raspberry mousse tortes, challah bread, cookie towers and much more! The kids are great, but when they get a bit out of hand, I can use my newly learned psychology skills to calm them down. I have another couple of weeks at the camp, and then I am going to visit colleges for the rest of the summer along with finishing my summer reading. Although it is not terribly exciting, I hope that it will be relaxing and fun. I hope everyone is having a great summer (enjoy it while it lasts!)!
