Ian

Hey, my name’s Ian, and for my whole life I’ve lived in Manhattan, NY. For the past 14 of my 17 years, I’ve attended the Horace Mann School, and even with the hectic life of a junior this past school-year, I was still able to find time to cook dinner for my family nearly every night. Along with my love for cooking, I also have a passion for social psychology. Both cooking and psychology share a common goal: to help others create more positive experiences in life. This theme continues into my work with City Harvest, a Manhattan-based food rescue and distribution organization. These interests, combined with the prestigious status of Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, are what drew me to attend the Hotel Operations Program. And no matter how much I enjoy waking up at 1 in the afternoon, I’m still excited to get back into the classroom!

Week one was a lot of fun. Even with all the work and mandatory office hours I was still able to meet hundreds of awesome kids. The weather was lacking, but that just gave everyone a chance to get to know each other better. It was nice to have a couple of friends from my school here, but even better was getting to meet all the kids in the Hotel School who are some of the coolest people I've ever met. I'm also really enjoying the diversity of the student body. I have friends from Dubai, Jamaica, Ontario, Hong Kong, and Pakistan. As a serious cook I was a little worried about the food before I came here, but Trillium (the lunch-hall) has the best Chinese food I've ever tasted!!!! Fresh waffles in the morning, Sesame Chicken for lunch, and Domino's for dinner. In the classroom I have just as much fun (well that might be a slight overstatement). Mark is passionate, funny, and intense, and Reneta is exactly the same! Their experience working in the hotel industry is what makes this program so influential.
