Directions

Ithaca is about 220 miles northwest of New York City and 55 miles south of Syracuse. To reach it, follow the directions below. Also, you may wish to visit the Ithaca and the Finger Lakes pages and the Cornell Visiting Ithaca page.

By air:

Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport, a small airport about 10 minutes from campus, is served by USAirways/America West, United Airlines, and Northwest Airlines; Syracuse Hancock International Airport is about an hour from campus.

Taxis are available at the Ithaca airport to bring students to campus. Cab companies include

  • Yellow Cab (607.277.2227),
  • University (607.277.7777), and
  • Cayuga Taxi (607.277.8294).

Ithaca Airline Limousine (telephone: 607.273.3030 or 800.273.9197) offers transportation from the Syracuse airport to campus for $65 per person, one way; $102 round trip. You'll need to call two days in advance to schedule a pick-up. It also offers transportation to, but not from, the Ithaca airport, for $16 per person. Fees are subject to change without notice.

By bus:

The bus terminal, in downtown Ithaca, is served by Shortline (607.277.8800 or 800.631.8405) and Greyhound (607.272.7930 or 800.231.2222).

Taxis are available at the bus station to bring students to campus. Cab companies include Yellow Cab (607.277.2227), University (607.277.7777), and Cayuga Taxi (607.277.8294). The usual fare from the bus station to Cornell is $5.60 per person plus a $0.10–0.75 fuel surcharge. There is an additional $1 charge for luggage larger than 3' x 3' and a $5 charge for luggage weighing more than 25 pounds. Although riders often share a cab to campus, the full fare applies to each individual.

By car:

Signs will direct you to the North Campus residence halls. Summer College staff members will be at driveway entrances to assist with details and directions.

On Opening Day, taxis and buses will drop students off on Sisson Place.

Please note that Summer College Program students may not bring cars to the program. You and/or your parents are responsible for making your travel arrangements to and from Cornell.

Regional driving directions

From the New York City area, take I-80 west to I-380 west to I-81 north to Route 79 west. From the New England area, take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) west to I-88 west to Route 206 west to Route 79 west. From areas west of New York State, take the New York State Thruway (I-90) east to Route 96 south.

Follow these directions to find the North Campus residence halls once you're in Ithaca:

  • From Routes 96 South, 89 South, or 79 East:
    Signs will direct you to Route 13 North. Follow Route 13 North to the North Triphammer Road exit. At that exit, turn right onto Triphammer Road. Follow Triphammer Road to campus (at the first stop sign, turn left and then take an immediate right in order to remain on Triphammer). As you approach campus, signs will direct you to the Summer College check-in point.
  • From Route 79 West (in part of Ithaca, Route 79 is called State Street):
    Turn right at the traffic light onto Stewart Avenue. Follow Stewart Avenue, bearing left after crossing first one bridge, then another. Follow Stewart Avenue to stop sign and turn right onto University Avenue. Take University Avenue to stop light and take a left onto the Thurston Avenue Bridge. A large gothic building will be straight ahead. Take second right-hand turn right after that building onto Wait Avenue. Take your first right again onto Triphammer Avenue. At this point you will see directional signs to Summer College check-in.
  • From Route 96B North:
    As you approach Ithaca, you will pass Ithaca College on your right. Drive down the hill into Ithaca (you will be on Aurora Street). When you arrive at Ithaca Commons (you'll see a large clock at the end of a pedestrian mall), turn right onto State Street. Go through the lights and up the hill. At your first light turn left onto Stewart Avenue. Follow Stewart Avenue, bearing left after crossing first one bridge, then another. Follow Stewart Avenue to stop sign and turn right onto University Avenue. Take University Avenue to stop light and take a left onto the Thurston Avenue Bridge. A large gothic building will be straight ahead. Take second right-hand turn right after that building onto Wait Avenue. Take your first right again onto Triphammer Avenue. At this point you will see directional signs to Summer College check-in.
  • From Route 13 North:
    Follow Route 13 North to the North Triphammer Road exit. At that exit, turn left onto Triphammer Road. Follow Triphammer Road to campus (at the first stop sign, turn left and then take an immediate right in order to remain on Triphammer). As you approach campus, signs will direct you to the Summer College check-in point.
  • From the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport:
    Connect with Route 13 South and take the North Triphammer Road exit. At that exit, turn left onto Triphammer Road. Follow Triphammer Road to campus (at the first stop sign, turn left and then take an immediate right in order to remain on Triphammer). As you approach campus, signs will direct you to the Summer College check-in point.
