Dining

Cornell Dining has earned the reputation for hosting the finest dining program in the Ivy League. It owes its success, in part, to recognition of student diversity. You'll find a wide and varying selection of foods at breakfast, lunch, and dinner (on Saturdays and Sundays, brunch and dinner). If you don't see your favorite foods, look for the suggestion box in the dining rooms. Tell us what you'd like.

Dress in the dining rooms is comfortable and informal; we do ask, however, that you wear shoes and a shirt at all times. You may feast on unlimited seconds, but we ask that you request only the amount of food you can reasonably eat. To help control waste during these meals (and to make service quicker), you'll be served only one entrée each time you enter the food service area.

You are not permitted to provide food and drink for others or to remove food and utensils from the dining area - with one exception: at the dinner meal, you may take a single piece of fruit or an ice cream bar with you when you leave. Campus Life reserves the right to inspect any backpacks, parcels, bags, or purses brought into the dining area. If you leave personal belongings in the dining area, Cornell cannot assume responsibility for them.

If you'd like to receive a box lunch because of an academic conflict (class during the length of the lunch period), you must fill out a box lunch request form 24 hours in advance. Forms are available from the cashier as you enter North Star. You may pick up the box lunch the morning of the class or as prearranged with the dining facility. Failure to pick up an ordered box lunch three times will forfeit your ability to order another box lunch.

The fine print

There are some important house rules that you should bear in mind. Most importantly, note that a violation of any of the terms and conditions set by Cornell Dining may result in temporary suspension of dining service. Violations will be reviewed by the program staff. Refunds will not be given for cards confiscated by dining staff as a result of abuse of dining privileges. The execution of a dining contract is not a commitment of admission to or continued enrollment in the university. Cornell Dining reserves the right to reschedule hours of operation in certain dining areas as demand necessitates. During emergencies, every effort will be made to continue dining service, even on a limited basis.

Your Cornell ID card

You'll get your Cornell ID card at check-in when you arrive on campus. It's the one with your picture on it. Your Cornell ID card identifies you as a current member of the Cornell community. You'll use it for a variety of services at Cornell including as an electronic door key and for eating in the dining halls.

Your Cornell ID card is the property of Cornell University, must be carried by you at all times, and is nontransferable. Hold onto your ID card. If you misplace it, ask the door checker at the dining hall if your card is being held there. If it's lost, you'll have to stop by the Summer College Academic Advising Office in B20 Day Hall and pay a replacement fee.

Summer Bucks account

You or your parents/guardians can put money on your Cornell ID card to purchase water and snacks in many vending machines on campus or at Bear Necessities in Robert Purcell Community Center through a Summer Bucks account. You can set up this account once you're on campus by visiting the Campus Life Web site. Funds in this account are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Students with special dietary requirements

Cornell Dining's professional staff members make every attempt to comply with special dietary needs if those needs are supported by a letter from a physician. You may consult a nutritionist on staff or chef about menu choices and medical considerations by calling 607.254.2992.

Prepackaged kosher meals are available. These are prepared at our kosher dining facility, 104 West. Meals are double wrapped and sometimes frozen. Fresh double-wrapped sandwiches also can be delivered upon request. If you wish to request kosher meals, please contact the North Star Dining managers at 607.254.2992 before you arrive on campus. You may pre-order kosher meals through the dining supervisor or door checker on duty at North Star Dining. If you order kosher meals but do not pick them up, you will be charged an additional fee.
