Gannett Health Services staff will help you maintain your health, care for illnesses and injuries, and obtain emergency and specialty medical care if you need it.
All Summer College students are eligible for services at Gannett Health Services, regardless of whether you have the Cornell Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) or private health insurance (see "Health Insurance Requirements" below ).
Gannett Health Services is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you can reach us by phone 24 hours a day, every day, at 607.255.5155. Gannett Health Services provides the following services:
- allergy shots and immunizations
- counseling and psychological services (emergencies and referrals only)
- pharmacy (prescriptions and over-the-counter supplies)
- general medical care
- health education
- laboratory and radiology services
- nutrition counseling
- physical and massage therapy

- referral to emergency and specialty medical care
Although students with urgent health problems may be seen on a "walk-in" basis, you should call ahead to schedule an appointment whenever possible. If you need advice about whether or when you need an appointment, call and talk it over with a nurse.
If you need medical advice or attention after hours or on weekends, you may consult by phone with a Gannett Health Services health care provider. (Urgent calls should be made by the head resident in your building.) If you need to see a doctor, you will be referred to Cayuga Medical Center's Convenient Care Center or Emergency Room. Residence staff members will assist you in making transportation arrangements.
If you have a chronic or ongoing medical condition, bring appropriate medical records with you to continue your care at Gannett Health Services. If you need allergy injections while you are here, please bring serum and written instructions from your prescribing health-care provider to Gannett Health Services when you arrive.
Fees are charged for most services and for appointments that are missed but not properly canceled. Consultation with a nurse about the need for an appointment or after-hours care is provided without charge. All charges for services provided by Gannett Health Services and off-campus providers are the responsibility of the student and/or student's family.
- Fees covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan will be submitted automatically.
- If you have other insurance, Gannett will provide a receipt you can submit for reimbursement.
- Gannett will give you a receipt (or send it to your parent/guardian). Charges can be paid by cash, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover).
- Due to credit card security regulations, Gannett cannot store credit card information for future use.
- Contact the Billing Office (607.255.7492) if you have any questions or concerns about health care expenses at Gannett Health Services.
If you withdraw from Summer College, you will no longer be eligible to use the university's health services.
Health insurance requirements
Because of the high costs of medical care, it is Cornell policy that all students, including participants in Cornell University Summer College, must have adequate health insurance coverage. The Cornell University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is an accident/sickness policy designed especially for students at Cornell and provides extensive coverage at a reasonable cost.
The SHIP provides coverage for illnesses and injuries, on and off campus, and includes special cost-saving features to keep the coverage as affordable as possible. The Cornell Office of Student Health Insurance, a five-minute walk from central campus, provides assistance to all SHIP members. The SHIP covers preexisting medical conditions and includes medical evacuation and repatriation under separate coverage through Assist America. SHIP members are covered twenty-four hours a day throughout the term of their enrollment, anywhere in the world, including (and especially) right here on campus at Gannett Health Services.
Please examine your existing insurance coverage carefully and compare it with the major provisions of the SHIP. Individuals covered by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) or preferred provider organizations (PPOs) often have severely limited out-of-area coverage that will not cover many costs incurred in the Ithaca area.
If you choose to enroll in the SHIP, return the SHIP enrollment form with the appropriate premium in US funds either by check or a bank money order to the Cornell University Student Health Insurance Office, 409 College Avenue, Suite 211, Ithaca, NY 14850. The office must receive the forms by May 30, 2008. (Students/parents will be given access to this form upon acceptance to Summer College.)
Please note, once a student has enrolled in the SHIP, the plan is not cancellable or refundable. In addition, we are not able to enroll students in the SHIP once your Summer College program has started.
For more information about the SHIP:
- Call 607.255.6363 or
- Visit the SHIP Web site.
