Personal safety

Cornell has two gorges on campus, which help to make Cornell one of the world's most beautiful campuses. The Cascadilla and Fall Creek gorges represent 10,000 years of beauty. Because the forces of water and gravity that created these gorges are still active, we list the following safety recommendations:

  • Do not swim and climb in the gorges. If you prefer to swim outdoors, go to Buttermilk Falls State Park. You can get there by taking a Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) bus.
  • Stay on designated paths at all times keeping in mind that these paths may be risky during and just after rainstorms.
  • Do not walk on closed paths.
  • Stay away from unguarded cliffs.
  • Do not hike after dark.
  • No bicycles or skateboards are allowed on the gorge paths.
  • Do not kick or throw stones into the gorge.
  • Proceed with caution and be aware of your surroundings.

We care about you and we want you to stay around for the whole program.
