Summer College Code of Conduct and House Rules
You should decide to participate in Summer College only if you are committed to maintaining the highest academic and social standards. These standards—distinct from those embodied in the Code of Academic Integrity—are described in the Summer College Code of Conduct and House Rules, contractual agreements to which the university requires agreement by students and their parent or guardian.
We have certain rules of conduct that stem from our respect for state laws and our emphasis on safety, honesty, and consideration for the rights of others. Cornell is a pluralistic community, and we are committed to equality of educational opportunity. We expect you, as a member of the Summer College community, to behave in a responsible manner on and off campus and to be courteous and respectful to your fellow students and to members of the faculty and staff. We offer you a learning-living situation that approximates, in most respects, what you will face as an entering freshman. However, there are some differences for high school students at Cornell.
We strongly suggest that students and parents spend time discussing why a program like ours needs rules of conduct and why a participant must conform to them, even though some rules may differ from customs at home. Students should consider them carefully and be willing to comply.
Please read the:
If you agree to support and abide by the university's rules and regulations outlined in these documents, read, sign, and return the Summer College Code of Conduct form. Keep a signed copy of this document for reference.
Failure to read, sign, and return the Code of Conduct form will prohibit you from registering in the program.
Your signature indicates that you know and understand the rules and that you agree to abide by them. Parents who sign the form should realize that students who fail to honor this agreement may be required to withdraw from the program or may be placed on probation with severe restrictions of their nonacademic activities.
Summer College disciplinary process
The Summer College disciplinary process is used when students do not meet the standards of the Code of Conduct. Our philosophy of discipline is based on several factors:
- Students participating in Summer College are minors; therefore, the University makes a commitment to students and their parents or guardians to exercise a greater degree of control over student activities than would be true for university undergraduates.
- Also, when people live in close proximity, it is important to have procedures that provide for orderly, safe, compatible, and cooperative living.
We will hold students fully accountable for their behavior and actions on campus as well as in our community.
The disciplinary process is outlined below. It will be enacted for any violation of regulations, ranging from not following our nightly check-in procedures to alcohol use. The imposed sanction depends on the severity and frequency of violations of the Code of Conduct. All Summer College staff members are required to enforce the Code.
Verbal Warning: A student receives a verbal warning from a staff person and it is documented. Parents will not be notified at this point.
Formal Written Warning: A student receives a verbal warning and a formal letter from the Head Resident or Judicial Officer stating that further infractions of the Code of Conduct will be dealt with more seriously. Parents will not be notified at this point.
Probation: A student is put on probation after a formal hearing with the Judicial Officer. Probation can include a specific time frame, early nightly check-in, community service, or other terms. Parents will be notified.
Dismissal: Students can be dismissed from Summer College if they have violated the Code of Conduct repeatedly, have violated the Cornell University Campus Code of Conduct or a New York State law, or have clearly demonstrated that they are not acting responsibly toward themselves or others (whether or not their actions are covered by specific rules). Parents will be notified after the dismissal decision has been made. In cases warranting dismissal, sanctions may not necessarily follow the sequence indicated above. An appeal of the decision to dismiss may be made by the student to the director within 24-hours of the decision. A student who is dismissed from Summer College will be required to leave campus within 24 hours of parent/guardian notification. No refund is given if a student is dismissed from the program.
Sanctions, in addition to dismissal from the program, may include (but are not limited to) such requirements as early night check, accompanying a staff member on nightly rounds, or a written report on a social issue. Our intention is to help students understand that we take the Code of Conduct seriously and to decrease the number of students who find themselves involved in the disciplinary process.
