Overview

This program is for you if you're:

  • Interested in health care;
  • Want to improve your prospects for admission to Medical, Dental, Nursing, Physical Therapy, or Pharmacy School; and/or
  • Completing additional coursework to enhance your application to a health care school.

The Cornell/DNS Certificate in Health Studies program is an intensive two-semester 32-credit program combining classroom-based study with real-world experiences. The program is held on the Cornell campus in Ithaca, N.Y., and features faculty from the Division of Nutritional Sciences (DNS), a department in Cornell's College of Human Ecology and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Program features

  • A sequence of two 3-credit courses in Integrated Health Sciences: Intensive problem-based, technology-enhanced courses, covering anatomy, physiology, metabolism, and the pathophysiology and management of common diseases—this sequence is the equivalent of a year of anatomy and physiology.
  • A 2-credit course in Health and the Humanities. A unique course that offers an exploration of the relationships of the arts with health, disease, healing, and dying, as expressed in different cultures through time.
  • Two courses in communication, to improve your writing skills.
  • Electives chosen in consultation with the Program Director; these may include:
  • Courses required or recommended for admission to a school for healthcare professions, such as nutrition, statistics, and epidemiology;
    • Courses to enhance your experience in biology, such as genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology;
    • Courses to enhance your understanding of human development and behavior; and
    • Courses to develop your understanding of the financial and professional practice of health care such as ones in economics and healthcare administration.
  • The use of a classroom specially designed for technology-enhanced active learning.
  • An approach that emphasizes deep learning and other qualities that will improve your success both in the classroom and as a healthcare professional.
  • An emphasis on team building and leadership.
  • Interaction with distinguished faculty.
  • Meetings with healthcare practitioners.

Limited enrollment and small class size will allow individualized one-on-one career advising and guidance.

In order to apply, participants must have completed an undergraduate degree, the majority of the prerequisites for the healthcare profession of their choice, and be in good academic standing.
