Reading Rome, Writing Rome:
Creative Writing Workshop in Italy 2008
May 22-June 14, 2008
Housing
Each student shares an apartment with several other students (apartments vary in size). All apartments are fully furnished and have complete cooking facilities (including pans, flatware, etc.) and laundry facilities. Apartments are equipped with pillows, linens, towels, and a hair dryer, and are professionally cleaned before and during the term. All apartments have wireless internet access. The large apartments have two bathrooms. The apartments are located within walking distance of the teaching facility in Palazzo Lazzaroni in the "Centro," which is the historic city center of Rome.
The cost of housing and cleaning is based upon the Euro but paid in US dollars. An estimate of the housing cost, based on the exchange rate, is $1,250 for the period between May 23 and June 14, 2008. The actual housing cost charge will be e-mailed to enrolling students just prior to the deposit deadline on February 14, 2008. The cost will be confirmed again by the final payment deadline of April 10.
Friday, May 23 is the move-in date for the apartments. (Please note that the departure date is the day before, Thursday, May 22, since the trans-Atlantic flight is an overnight flight.) Saturday, June 14 is the move-out date. Students must vacate apartments on the morning of June 14 so that the cleaning staff may begin preparing the apartments for the next group of students. (The group flight leaves Rome on the morning of June 14.)
Students who plan to remain in Rome or travel in Italy or Europe after the end of the program must also move out of the apartments in the morning on June 14. Please note that there are no provisions for leaving suitcases, paintings, or other goods in either the apartments or the Palazzo following the program.
Housing Preference Form
On or just after the final payment deadline of April 10, students will receive by e-mail a housing preference form, which must be returned immediately, so that students may be assigned to particular apartments and given their Rome telephone numbers and addresses. The housing preference form allows students to express a preference for particular housemates, if they happen to know others enrolled in the program, and for either same-sex or coed housing. The form also allows students to identify lifestyle issues that may be important to them and therefore affect their apartment assignments.
Damage Deposit
Each student must make a fully refundable damage deposit of $100 in late April at the departure meeting (time and place to be announced).
