Intensive Nepali language program
June 9 - July 18, 2008
Cosponsored by the Department of Asian Studies, the South Asia Program, and the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions at Cornell University, this six-credit program provides an unusual opportunity to develop competence in Nepali, the official language of Nepal. Classes at both beginning and continuing levels are taught by Senior Lecturer Shambhu Oja from Cornell University and Visiting Lecturer Banu Oja from the Cornell Nepal Study Program at Tribhuvan University.
Emphasis is on the spoken colloquial language, in dialogues, exercises, and conversational practice. In addition, special attention is given to assisting students in developing vocabularies and skills appropriate to their unique professional needs. Reading and writing practice use both popular and scholarly materials in the Nepali (Devanagari) script.
Courses
Students spend four hours per day in class and two additional hours working with recorded materials in addition to the time required for daily preparation. Films and guest lecturers complement the summer program. Assignment to NEPAL 1101, 2201/2202, or 3301/3302 is made by the instructors upon evaluation after arrival.
The tuition charge for this six-week, six-credit program is $5,550. A limited number of U.S. Department of Education fellowships, covering tuition and fees and providing a maintenance allowance, are available through the South Asia Program. These fellowships are open to United States citizens and permanent residents who are either enrolled or accepted to enroll in any graduate program. We strongly encourage applications from historically underrepresented populations, including members of racial or ethnic minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. There is a strong possibility for other support.
Students applying for financial aid should submit, in addition to the application, a transcript, one letter of recommendation, and a brief statement of study and career objectives. Applications are due by April 15, and must include a US $200 nonrefundable deposit that will be applied to tuition costs. The remainder of the tuition is due before or on the first day of the program. Checks should be made payable to Cornell University.
