Imagining Rome: Art Studio and Creative Writing in Rome

May 21-June 19, 2009

The following information pertains to the last time this program was offered. If you would like to be notified via e-mail when new information is available, please subscribe to the Summer Session announcement list.

Courses

This is a six-credit, two-course program. (At Cornell, six credits equal half a semester and therefore qualify financial-aid students to apply for summer financial aid. See the financial-aid page for more information.)

Students specialize in either writing or art.

From among the courses listed below, students choose two courses in Creative Writing or two courses in Studio Art as follows:

Note that in Rome, creative writing and art courses sometimes meet together for site visits and other short trips.

Cornell undergraduate students should consult with their academic advisors before choosing classes in the Rome program.

Undergraduates from other colleges and universities should discuss the courses and the program with their own academic advisors to discover how the Cornell transfer credits might be counted.

Graduate students should consult with their special committee chairs or thesis advisors before enrolling. Graduate students in writing should enroll in ENGL 7950. Graduate students in art should enroll in ART 4509. (Note that under certain circumstances Cornell graduate students may petition the relevant instructor to enroll for fewer than six credits.)

Requests for particular courses are subject to availability, since some classes close out sooner than others, and the program as a whole is relatively small.

Credits

For Cornell students, all credits count towards graduation and will appear on the transcripts under the heading "Summer Session/Special Program." Credits may also count toward a student's major, distribution requirements, or elective requirements.

At Cornell, ENGL 4950, if taken for four credits, and ENGL 4810 may fulfill an English major requirement for 4000-level seminars; ENGL 3830 and 3850 also may count towards the English major; ENGL 7950 is open to graduate or post-graduate students only and only with permission from Professor Vaughn. ART 1505, ART 3702, and ART 4509 may count toward the art major at Cornell.

In some instances, the courses may count toward graduation at another institution.

Students who have special curricular needs may petition to enroll for seven credits rather than six credits. They should discuss their needs and options with one of the professors. Work that is additional to the work done during the Rome session will be required of anyone who succeeds in petitioning to enroll for seven credits.

Grades

Grades are computed into the student's GPA. Courses must be taken for letter grades.
