Marine Science - Shoals Marine Laboratory
May 15-August 10, 2010
Shoals Marine Laboratory, Maine
The Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) on Appledore Island is a seasonal field station run cooperatively by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. SML offers college, high school, and graduate students a unique opportunity to study marine science in a setting where the ocean is just outside the door. Weekend seminars and workshops are available for the general public, families, and alumni in topics ranging from nature photography to landscape painting. All are welcome, and some programs are specially designed for children.
Located about six miles off the Maine and New Hampshire coastline, ninety-five-acre Appledore Island is remote yet accessible via a one-hour boat ride from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Many species of marine organisms call Appledore and the neighboring islands their summer home; migratory shore birds stop over enroute to summer breeding grounds, while harbor seals use nearby Duck Island as their summer nursery. Participants become immersed in their subjects as the island is free from the usual distractions of life on the mainland.
