Edward Baptist

Edward Baptist teaches in Cornell’s Department of History, focusing on the United States in the nineteenth century and, in particular, on the history of the enslavement of African Americans in the South.

Ed earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to Cornell, he taught at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. He is currently the house professor and dean at the Carl Becker House.

Ed is the author of Creating an Old South: Middle Florida’s Plantation Frontier Before the Civil War (UNC Press), and his Encyclopedia of Slavery in the Americas is forthcoming.
