Ellen Avril

The chief curator at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Ellen Avril has curated or co-curated more than forty exhibitions at the Johnson on a broad range of topics in traditional and contemporary Asian art. Among the exhibition catalogs she has authored or contributed to are Nature Observed and Imagined: Five Hundred Years of Chinese Paintings; Ancient Artistry: Pre-Chinese Ceramics and Jades from the Shatzman Collection; and Heavenly Earth: Early Chinese Ceramics from the Shatzman Collection.

Ellen served as project director for the renovation and reinstallation of the Johnson Museum’s Asian art galleries in conjunction with the 2011 building expansion. She was formerly associate curator in charge of East Asian art at the Cincinnati Art Museum and earned her MA in art history from the University of Kansas.
