Junior Cornellians (11-12)

Morning courses are taught by Cornell students with a hands-on approach to learning. Students enroll in one course for the week.

Healthy meals and kid-friendly snacks, afternoon electives, swimming, bowling, and field trips will keep your Junior Cornellians busy and active all day, while they make great new friends.

Options

  • Resident Junior Cornellians participate in youth activities from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and also take part in supervised evening activities between 6:30 p.m. and bedtime. They reside adjacent to parents in housing on North Campus or with parents at the Hilton Homewood Suites. See Housing for details.
  • Commuter Junior Cornellians attend from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.


Courses for Junior Cornellians and Big Reds Together

Sailing
Big Reds and JCs can learn the basics of sailing in this introductory program at Cornell’s Merrill Family Sailing Center on Cayuga Lake. They’ll study the parts of a boat, learn how to tie knots, and get hands-on practice in setting sail and navigating through the water. The indoor rainy-day demonstrations and outdoor fun on the lake do not require any previous sailing experience, but everyone must know how to swim. Additional fee: $140.

Outdoor Adventures
Led by instructors from Cornell’s Outdoor Education program, Big Reds and JCs will sample group challenge facilities such as the newly renovated Lindseth Climbing Wall and the Hoffman Challenge high and low ropes courses. All five mornings will be filled with physical activities for campers who like to be on the move, including ground-level games, rappelling off the stadium, and ziplining across the gorge. Additional fee: $160.

Courses for Junior Cornellians Only

Mock Trials
Divided into teams of prosecution and defense, JCs will hone their skills at public speaking, delivery, debate, and argumentation. Guided by our instructors, they’ll read through adapted stories, identify legal arguments, assign roles, and develop cases. They’ll practice critical reading, argument development, and questioning from each perspective to prepare for trial, which will be conducted fully in character with costumes and props.

Web Game Design
JCs will learn the basics of computer programming for games through Scratch, a language designed to help students create their own computer games. The Scratch online community’s philosophy puts an emphasis on the social aspects of creativity. JCs will enjoy putting their imaginations to work on developing a computer game and then sharing it with friends and family! Laptops required.

Youth program fees

The program fee for residential campers (per youngster, per week) covers the course, housing, seventeen meals, and all morning, afternoon, and evening activities. It does not cover special instructional fees for some youth courses, as noted in the course listings. The Youth Program participants reside adjacent to parents on North Campus or with parents at the Hilton Homewood Suites.

Sample day for Explorers (7-8), Big Reds (9-10), and Junior Cornellians (11-12)

  • 7:15-8:30 a.m.: Before-camp activities: Crafts, games, free play with breakfast snack available
  • 8:30-9:00 a.m.: Welcome activity: Upon arrival, campers join an activity
  • 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: Morning course
  • 12:00-1:00 p.m.: Lunch provided in the Robert Purcell Marketplace Eatery
  • 1:00-2:00 p.m.: Visit from "Dan the Snakeman" and his snakes, frogs, and tortoises
  • 2:00-3:00 p.m.: Campus hike to the Cornell Dairy Bar for ice cream and a tour
  • 3:00-4:00 p.m.: Swimming at Helen Newman Fitness Center or trip to nearby state park
  • 4:00-4:30 p.m.: Snacks and games
  • 4:30-6:00 p.m.: After-camp activities

New for Summer 2018: Before- and after-camp care

Before- and after-camp care

Available from 7:15 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and from 4:30-6:00 p.m. daily, campers can extend their stay with us and enjoy enriching games, crafts, and other fun activities under the supervision of our counselors. Drop-in care is available.

Extra-fun nights

Available evenings from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., campers can "ramp-up" their camp experience with extra fun activities while parents/guardians enjoy a night off! Dinner is included.

  • Before-camp care: $45 (per youngster, per week)
  • After-camp care: $45 (per youngster, per week)
  • Both before- and after-camp care: $80(per youngster, per week)
  • Daily drop-ins, Early/Late: $10 per instance
  • Extra-fun nights: $30 (per youngster, per night)
