Cornell University School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions

About Professional Studies

In keeping with its mission of outreach and extension, Cornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions (SCE) provides high-quality programs for professionals, executives, and students committed to launching, changing, or advancing their careers.

SCE's Professional Studies department deploys Cornell's vast and varied educational resources to help participants:

  • connect and collaborate with others in their field,
  • learn from individuals doing similar work in innovative and highly effective ways,
  • enhance their productivity in a rapidly changing environment,
  • build essential, real-world skills and knowledge,
  • prepare for and tackle critical challenges, and
  • reduce the costs of doing business.

Learning opportunities include credit and non-credit courses, full semester classes and dynamic one-day seminars, inspiring on- and off-campus programs, online learning opportunities, and internship programs.

The history of SCE's professional programs dates back to the 1870s, when Cornell designed summer schools in botany, chemistry, drawing, entomology, geology, and zoology, to take advantage of the season's natural outdoor classrooms and to serve elementary and secondary school teachers who wished to further their education while their schools are not in session. (See SCE history.)

Recent programs for adult learners include the annual Administrative Management Institute; the Institute for Internet Culture, Policy, and Law; the Policy Development Program; the Cornell University Viticulture and Enology Experience; and English for International Students and Scholars.

In addition, SCE offers several highly regarded internship programs to undergraduates to provide opportunities for developing professional contacts, gaining real-world experience, and strengthening resumes.

Past programs have addressed topics including accounting, animal behavior, business, engineering, health information technology, leadership, manufacturing technology, nutrition, site grading, space weather, teaching biology, and many other subjects.

Please contact the Professional Studies department if you would like help developing a custom program. For more information, see our Custom Programs page.
