The program is open to any person eighteen years of age or older who has a basic knowledge of English and has graduated from secondary school or its equivalent. Admission to EISS is not the same as admission to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. (For information on university applications, qualifications, and admission see: Cornell University Admissions).
You are placed in the appropriate level of instruction, based on the results of an English language test given during the program orientation. Your individual motivation, level of proficiency, and language aptitude contribute to your progress in English. The program is designed to develop overall language skills useful in a university or professional setting and does not view a test score as the instructional goal.
The full program charge, due at the time of registration, is $4,860. In addition, students are responsible for a health fee.
If you are enrolling in a Fall program with the Johnson School, please contact the Special Programs office before submitting your program fee.
Additionally, participants should plan to spend an estimated $2,700 ($450 per week for six weeks) on living expenses, which include the cost of housing, meals, books and supplies, program trips, and personal expenses such as laundry, recreation, and incidentals.
See payment methods for acceptable ways to submit your program charge.
To ensure that students have access to health services, Cornell requires everyone either to:
- enroll in Cornell's Student Health Plan (mandatory for international students); or
- pay the student health fee ($100 in the summer) and hold alternative health insurance that meets Cornell's requirements.
Students who enroll in SHP or pay the student health fee (and hold alternative health insurance) can access most Cornell Health services for a $10/visit copay.
Students should review the "Health fee and Student Health Plan" section of the summer health and safety page to learn more about the student health fee and on-campus health services at Cornell Health, and to determine whether they need to enroll in SHP.
Any questions concerning health insurance requirements should be directed to Cornell Health, 607.255.5155.
*The Special Programs staff will provide instructions for submitting any fees for health services upon your enrollment.
If a student finds it necessary to withdraw from the program, written notice must be sent to the Director of Executive and Special Programs, Cornell University, School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, B20 Day Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853-2801.
