Paul Shaw looks at everything. A teacher of calligraphy and typography at Parson's School of Design in New York City, he noticed that the current version of taxi cab signage set the "kerning" (spacing) for "NYC" so tight as to render it almost illegible and featured a circle around the contrast-colored "T" so that it read "T-Axi." He saw that the "Q" in the shop sign "Pacific Aquarium & Pet" had its leg turned inside instead of pointing out, an inverted belly button, so that the tail did not encroach on the telephone number perched below it
