Exploring Medicine: Health Care Careers and Culture in NYC

January 22–May 10, 2019

Course

You'll enroll in the three-credit course HE 1901: Engaged Learning for Medical Careers.

You'll be expected to

  • Attend all lectures, discussions, and assigned hospital rotations.
  • Complete a weekly three-page reflection essay about your experiences in the hospital.
  • Complete a (minimum) five-page term paper on a topic covered during the semester.
  • Give an in-class final presentation reflecting on what you’ve learned through the program.

From the director:

This engaged learning course will challenge you to learn from your own experiences. Through a structured (oral and written) process of participation, observation, and reflection, you’ll develop medicine-relevant skills, learn to effectively engage patients and work in teams, gain confidence as a producer of knowledge, increase your self-reliance as an active learner, and exercise critical-thinking skills.

In addition, this program will help you prepare to apply to competitive colleges and premedical programs.

The director will provide all readings online.
